Every Little Bit Helps

"What do I look like, the President?"

He was a moron. A friendly-enough-seeming guy with fantastically devious puppeteers and a name enough dumb people recognized to sweep him into the highest office in the land by a whopping...oh, by a questionable margin, actually; perhaps even a negative one. Twice.
Bonus Trivia:
The 2000 US Presidential contest was the closest in US history since Rutherford B. Hayes up and stole that shit in 1876. Huh. Same old shit...
This being the case--especially once you throw in everything else that transpired from 2000-2008 and consider that I am a man with blood coursing through my veins--I always enjoy hearing tell of every. single. slight. to His Idiocy George W. Bush, no matter how trivial.

These small gems certainly don't make up for what should happen to W--Navy SEALS should hold him on the bronze knee of the Lincoln Memorial while everybody in the world gets three whacks on his bottom with a weapon of their choice--but they are gratifying nonetheless and life is about the simple pleasures, right?

Et tu, Brute?

How do you know when a straw is your last?

Just when I thought all the straws were long gone, this uber-depressing news comes via Huffington Post:
A central figure behind the Center for Disease Control's (CDC) claims disputing the link between vaccines and autism and other neurological disorders has disappeared after officials discovered massive fraud involving the theft of millions in taxpayer dollars. Danish police are investigating Dr. Poul Thorsen, who has vanished along with almost $2 million that he had supposedly spent on research.
Thorsen was a leading member of a Danish research group that wrote several key studies supporting CDC's claims that the MMR vaccine and mercury-laden vaccines were safe for children.

His study has long been criticized as fraudulent since it failed to disclose that the increase was an artifact of new mandates requiring, for the first time, that autism cases be reported on the national registry.

Mainstream media, particularly the New York Times, has relied on this study as the basis for its public assurances that it is safe to inject young children with mercury -- a potent neurotoxin -- at concentrations hundreds of times over the U.S. safety limits.
The discovery of Thorsen's fraud came as the result of an investigation by Aarhus University and CDC which discovered that Thorsen had falsified documents and, in violation of university rules, was accepting salaries from both the Danish university and Emory University in Atlanta -- near CDC headquarters -- where he led research efforts to defend the role of vaccines in causing autism and other brain disorders. Thorsen's center has received $14.6 million from CDC since 2002.

Leading independent scientists have accused CDC of concealing the clear link between the dramatic increases in mercury-laced child vaccinations beginning in 1989 and the epidemic of autism, neurological disorders and other illnesses affecting every generation of American children since. Questions about Thorsens's scientific integrity may finally force CDC to rethink the vaccine protocols since most of the other key pro vaccine studies cited by CDC rely on the findings of Thorsen's research group.
You know, when you can't even count on doctors and scientists funded by the CDC to be honest about their research into the effects of drugs on children, I think you need to doubt just about everybody out there, no matter what they do.

So, the next time your doctor says you'll feel much better with a new horse-pill down your gullet once a day, the next time your banker says you should take advantage of a great new opportunity, the next time your mechanic says you need a new thingermajigger, tackle him to the ground, stick the tip of a knife into his throat, and ask him again, when his life depends on it.

It sucks that things have come to this, but these days, you need to be sure.

By the way, since I haven't had a chance to mention it before, I had the great fortune of hearing Robert Kennedy, Jr. give a speech once, and it was not only eye-opening, but downright inspiring. I thought to myself that, if it weren't for the speech impediment and the Conservative bent of the deluded common folk, he would be president right now, could be president right now.

He was speaking at the 2008 Border Governors Conference in Universal City, CA, and damn if he didn't--off the top of his head--spend fifteen passionate minutes telling the whole auditorium, in great-yet-completely-accessible detail, how to greenly solve the energy crisis--at a profit--in a mere ten-year span.

It involves updating the nation's admittedly archaic energy grid--at great initial expense, but easily recouped over time--to allow for energy to be soaked up (via solar panels, wind turbines, etc) where fewer people use energy (deserts, the Great Plains, etc) and sent back into the grid to supply those areas where more energy is used but less is generated, which is something that is impossible right now.

It is a simple solution to our problems that the oil companies--and those invested-in/owned-by them--don't like. Meanwhile, Israel--among other small nations--are in the process of converting their energy grid to do this (RFKJ's company is helping them do it) because it makes sense, damnit.

Did the U.S. and Mexican Governors at the conference listen?

Well, let's put it this way--despite the fact that it was a conference focused mainly on better stewardship of the environment (per The Governator), most of the governors weren't even pretending to listen and the Governor of Texas walked out after two minutes.

Maybe RFKJ should have chased him down, tackled him, put a knife to his throat, and...

Now THIS Is a Movement I Can Get Behind!

Students belonging to the group Atheist Agenda are offering porn in exchange for Bibles at the Student Center at the University of Texas-San Antonio, of all places. This has been going on since 2005, but I must have forgotten about it.

Did you, too? If so, more here.

Now, I don't have much use for porn, since my available sexual partners are so numerous they have splintered into factions, but if you ask me, that's a pretty fair trade. Hell, it might even get me to start collecting those stupid Bibles people plant in motel rooms, trying to scoop you up and drop you right into the gnashing teeth of the Lord when you're at your weakest, about to pay for porn in a depressing and filthy room somewhere...

Also, in sexual news today, another Republican hatemonger was busted with a double whammy--getting a DUI while taking a man home from a gay club for sex. And let's keep in mind that link is from FoxNews...

Bow Your Head in Shame as Dubai Unveils Highest Swimming Pool in the World

The Burj Khalifa under construction

It is on the 76th floor of the new Burj Khalifa skyscraper, in the Arab Emirate of Dubai, which was unveiled today in an elaborate ceremony that was probably necessary considering the $1.5 billion price tag of the 2,717'-tall building in the middle of a vast desert.

By comparison, the Sears Tower in Chicago is only 1,450 feet tall. Imagine a building almost twice that size and you are beginning to get the picture. There are 160 habitable floors.

The question on many people's lips is...why? There is hardly a shortage of land in Dubai, and therefore no sensible reason to build UP instead of OUT, unless you're trying to impress someone with your brazen lack of common and financial sense, as it would be far cheaper and safer to build horizontally.

Considering the fact that the building is state-owned and the government had to beg its wealthier neighbor, Abu Dhabi, for a $25 billion bailout to finish the project and run its government, color me doubly unimpressed with the end result of the massive human effort that went into this building's construction.

My response to the news that owners of the units in the building have already seen their investments plummet by 50% before they could even move-in is a self-satisfied smile, followed by a biting monologue:
You wanted to brag to some other rich assholes that you bought an entire floor of the tallest building on Earth for $20 million? Fuck you--now one of those rich assholes can buy it from you for $10 million, fill it with $10 million in gold coins, and swim around in them like Scrooge McDuck while giving you the finger on a streaming webcam. And you deserve it.
The world's highest bar is on the 155th floor. The highest mosque in the world may or may not have already been built on the 158th floor (depending on what website you're reading). The building has the fastest elevators in the world.

Does anyone outside of Texas really give a shit about all this pointless dick-measuring?

I guess East Texas (aka Saudi Arabia) does. Supposedly, plans are already in the works to build a taller building there.

The man behind the mile-high tower in Saudi Arabia, Prince al-Walid bin Talal
Doesn't he just look like a selfish, pro-oil, evil mastermind
bent on creating the world's highest brothel, naming it the Mile-High Club,
and hanging out there after a long day of practicing evil faces in the mirror?

When and where will this obsession end? When we finally build a building that reaches all the way to the moon and swivels/stretches as the moon follows its orbit? Does China already have this beauty in the works, or will we see a few more incremental stages between now and that triumphant day? Can we not instead focus our efforts and resources on providing single-story housing for the working poor and affordable alternative-energy for the masses?

Believe it or not, there is way more money in it, fellas...

Houston's Mayor Is So Gay

Literally. City Controller Annise Parker is openly gay and she just defeated former City Attorney Gene Locke, an African-American, in a run-off election, to become the mayor-elect of Houston.

Although she received 53% of the vote, the pear-shaped sparkplug in the unflattering wool suit didn't exactly ride in on a wave of popularity--roughly 150,000 votes were cast in a city of over 2 million people.

Is this because most Texans would rather sit this one out than have to choose between a black guy and a lesbian? Hmm...as tempting as it is to say 'yes, that makes sense' it appears only 188,000 votes were cast in the initial election, which did feature at least one old white man.

What could be the cause of this low voter turnout in the largest city in Texas, a state whose inhabitants generally pride themselves on being outspoken, if usually on the wrong side of the issue?

Were all the candidates gay? Were they giving out free gun racks at WalMart? Were the American Idol auditions held the same day?

Is Houston a city made up almost entirely of orphaned children? Are the sidewalks paved with licorice and the grass actually spray-painted Big League Chew? Are their schools merely Chuck E. Cheeses in disguise? Did Oliver Twist deliver Parker the votes in exchange for an extra helping of gruel?

Or is the real Houston more like the rest of the country than we non-Texans would care to admit, its residents more aware than ever of how pointless most elections are, considering the fact that pretty much every politician is owned by the same interests and will come to the same end result, if by slightly different paths?

Not including the presidential contests held every four years, we have reached a point of gross disengagement on the part of the electorate, a direct result of our growing disenchantment with our leaders of the last...60 years. We may not have realized it at the time, but we realize it now--all the local, state, and national leaders we elected have all played their part in steering us into this irretrievably-fucked cesspool of modern politics and social/fiscal responsibility.

Whether they allowed lobbyists dictate policy in exchange for campaign money or consultant jobs post-office, or turned a blind eye while the financial industry ran amok, or let Halliburton start an eternal war on terror, our elected officials have consistently chosen business interests over the interests of their constituents, over the interests of the planet we all live on.

Now we have arrived at a place in time where The Machine is too big to fail--the rich want to get even richer, at any cost, and they have enough money to make it happen. They know all they need to do is lie, grease a few dozen palms, have those greased palms spread the lie, and the details will get lost in committee or on page 44E of a newspaper nobody reads.

We, the voters, are guilty of aiding and abetting, by giving these conspirators our votes time and time again. What better way to avoid future blame than failing to cast a vote, right? We'll show them!

Of course, this failure to participate only makes matters worse and will eventually result in some future class-struggle-cum-revolution, but whatever--much like our response to recycling efforts, water and electricity conservation, and pollution control, we don't really care because we'll all be dead by the time the effects are really felt.

Or will we? Who knows--the future is always uncertain (unless you're one of the lucky ones).

One thing that is certain is that selfishly doing whatever you feel like and crossing your fingers that you won't have to personally face the consequences is not as helpful as thinking of the big picture and using those fingers to enact whatever small changes you can in your daily life.

Stop being selfish, become and remain informed, vote wisely, hold people accountable for their actions, and help make the world a better place for all those goddamn children poor people keep having...
